The Overlook

A Hall of Horrors Cave & Corridor Adventure

S2 on the Summit Squeeze Scale - Learn more here.

Welcome to The Overlook — a nearly two-mile cave and corridor journey through the wild heart of the Hall of Horrors area in Joshua Tree National Park.

This Summit Exclusive adventure winds through talus caves, hidden corridors, slot-style passages, and massive boulder fields, connecting three incredible summit viewpoints — or “Overlooks.” It’s adventurous, immersive, and the perfect introduction to the world of Joshua Tree caves and corridors.

What Makes The Overlook Special

The Overlook is designed as an S2 on the Summit Squeeze Scale — meaning:

  • Moderate squeezes

  • Some tight passages (optional in most cases)

  • Boulder scrambling and route finding

  • Short hiking sections

  • Big adventure feel without extreme commitment

It’s ideal for adventurous beginners, families with active teens, and climbers looking for something totally different from traditional routes.

The Journey

Over the course of nearly two miles, you’ll explore:

  • The Goonies Cave – A twisting, playful cave system that feels straight out of a treasure hunt.

  • The Smiley Face Cave – A hidden gem with natural rock features that seem to grin back at you.

  • The Portal – A surreal passageway that feels like stepping into another world.

  • The Secret Garden – A quiet, tucked-away chamber surrounded by towering rock walls.

  • Creature Cave – Wild formations and shadows that spark the imagination.

  • The Rocky Balboa Ramp – A legendary stone ramp scramble that’s pure fun and pure Joshua Tree.

Along the way, you’ll summit three separate Overlooks with sweeping views across the Hall of Horrors landscape. Each one offers a totally different perspective of Joshua Tree’s maze-like granite terrain.
