The Summit Squeeze Scale™
Choose Your Joshua Tree Cave and Corridor Adventure Level
How Difficult Are Caves & Corridors Tours in Joshua Tree?
If you're booking a Caves & Corridors tour with Summit Climbing Guides in Joshua Tree National Park, you're probably asking:
How tight are the passages?
How physical is it?
Is this right for me?
That’s exactly why we created the Summit Squeeze Scale™.
Our caves are not underground caverns. They are above-ground talus caves, granite slot corridors, hidden passageways, and natural rock mazes formed within Joshua Tree’s massive granite formations.
The Squeeze Scale™ measures:
Tightness of passages
Scrambling and chimneying movement
Exposure and elevated terrain
Route complexity
Mental commitment
It’s not a climbing grade.
It’s a Joshua Tree–specific adventure intensity scale designed exclusively for our Caves & Corridors tours.
🪨 S1 – Spacious

Mostly upright walking
Wide talus corridors

🪨🪨 S2 – Snug
Moderate Slot Corridor Adventure
Best for: Adventurous beginners
S2 routes include:
Short, manageable squeezes

Most active guests choose S2.
🪨🪨🪨 S3 – Tight

S3 routes involve:
Sustained narrow corridors

Are These Underground Caves?
No.
Our Caves & Corridors tours explore above-ground talus caves and granite slot corridors formed naturally within Joshua Tree’s rock formations.
These are not deep subterranean cave systems.
They are navigable rock labyrinths shaped by geology, time, and massive stacked granite boulders.
This makes them:
More accessible
Naturally ventilated
Perfect for year-round adventure
Why Summit Climbing Guides Created the Squeeze Scale™
Joshua Tree cave tours vary dramatically in tightness and physical demand. Simply labeling a tour “easy” or “advanced” doesn’t give guests enough clarity.
The Squeeze Scale™ was created specifically for Summit’s exclusive Caves & Corridors routes so guests can:
Choose confidently
Understand physical requirements
Progress over multiple visits
Experience the right level of challenge
It’s one of the ways Summit Climbing Guides stands apart from other Joshua Tree guiding companies.

Frequently Asked Questions
Joshua Tree Caves & Corridors Tours
Are the caves underground?
No. Our Caves & Corridors tours explore above-ground talus caves and granite slot corridors formed naturally within Joshua Tree’s massive rock formations.
These are not deep subterranean cave systems. Instead, they are navigable rock labyrinths created by stacked granite boulders, erosion, and time. They are naturally ventilated, scenic, and uniquely Joshua Tree.
How difficult are the Caves & Corridors tours?
We use the Summit Squeeze Scale™ to rate difficulty from S1 (Spacious) to S4 (Full Send).
The scale measures:
Tightness of passages
Amount of scrambling and chimneying
Exposure and elevated terrain
Route complexity
Mental commitment
This gives you a clear understanding of what to expect before booking your Joshua Tree cave tour.
Do I need climbing experience?
No climbing experience is required.
Our tours focus on scrambling, full-body movement, and guided navigation through granite corridors rather than technical rock climbing. Your guide provides movement coaching and route guidance throughout the experience.
If you can hike and move confidently over uneven terrain, you can likely participate — just choose the appropriate Squeeze Scale level.
Are the passages claustrophobic?
Some routes can be narrow.
S1 and many S2 routes feature wide corridors and minimal squeezing.
S3 and S4 routes include sustained narrow sections and body-length squeezes.
If you are uncomfortable in tight spaces, we recommend choosing S1 or S2 and speaking with us before booking.
Is this suitable for families?
Yes.
S1 and select S2 routes are family-friendly and provide adventurous exploration without extreme tightness. They are a great option for active families looking for a unique Joshua Tree experience beyond traditional hiking.
We’re happy to help recommend the right level for your group.
